SCA has openings for an Industrial Hygienist. Openings are available in the in the San Francisco and Oakland offices. This job will have a focus on construction-related hazardous materials projects, including asbestos, lead, PCBs, mercury, and other common hazardous materials. The position will also be involved in safety and health duties for hazardous waste removal projects (such as underground storage tank removal, contaminated soil excavation, and remediation system installation). In addition, the position will involve work in indoor air quality and other "classical" industrial hygiene investigations, such as solvent exposure, noise surveys, radiation surveys, and others.
The position is ideal for an Industrial Hygienist with some experience in the asbestos and lead field who wants to take on more responsibility and gain more breadth of experience. You will work directly with SCA's three Certified Industrial Hygienists and will receive technical support and training to complement your experience.
The position will have a mix of field work and office-based work. Depending upon your capabilities, the position may develop into an Assistant Team Leader or Team Leader position, where your responsibilities will include managing more junior employees.
The core responsibilities for this job include:
- performing surveys and investigations for lead and asbestos;
- writing workplans and removal specifications for hazardous materials;
- managing asbestos and lead abatement projects;
- observing abatement contractors and verifying specification compliance;
- preparing safety and health plans for UST removal, excavation projects, and other hazardous waste removal projects;
- training classes for asbestos and lead awareness, bloodborne pathogens, hearing conservation, Hazardous Waste Operations, and other topics.
- interpreting lab and field data;
- writing reports;
- coordinating with analytical laboratories;
- planning and conducting indoor air quality investigations;
- planning and performing industrial hygiene investigations.
Requirements for this position are:
a degree in Science or Engineering, or experience equivalent;
relevant AHERA courses, including Building Inspector, Contractor/Supervisor, Management Planner, Project Designer;
excellent written and verbal communication skills;
excellent computer skills (including Word and Excel);
excellent organizational skills;
experience with relevant field tools;
1-2 years of similar experience with asbestos and lead-based paint management;
possession of a Cal/OSHA CSST/CAC certification (REQUIRED);
Environmental Scientist -

SCA has immediate openings in the following offices for an Environmental Scientist:
This is an entry-level position to perform technical work at SCA. You will begin with an extensive orientation to SCA's work procedures, and will attend two weeks of EPA training classes for asbestos inspection and monitoring. You will be also be trained on XRF lead paint detection equipment and receive 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations training. Experienced SCA staff will be available to assist you as you develop your experience in these areas.
Most SCA employees who start in this position will spend much of their time performing asbestos and lead investigations and construction monitoring removal projects under supervision of other SCA staff. In order to perform this work autonomously, you will take a half-day CalOSHA exam after working at SCA for several months. After passing the exam, and obtaining the requisite experience, you will be certified to perform this type of work independently.
Other types of projects you may encounter in your first year at SCA include industrial hygiene sampling, indoor air quality investigations, and Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessments. The position will include approximately 75% field work and 25% office work over the course of the year. Note that SCA will train you in the necessary technical areas, so you do not need to have experience in the environmental field. The most important things you can bring to the job are a desire to learn, an ability to be flexible, and a willingness to work hard. Occasional travel with overnight stays will be required for some projects. Most of these sites are located in California; however there are some projects that require occasional out-of-state travel. You will also be responsible for occasional weekend work (approximately 1 weekend every 4-5 weeks).
